Best 3 Person Kayaks – Reviews & Buying Guide [Updated: May 2023]

Written by:

In the last few years alone, tonnes of new kayaks have entered the market – we have reviewed almost all of them to answer your question of which is the best 3-person kayak?

Many inflatable kayaks have many significant benefits, but you need to be careful when purchasing. Lots of cheaper models have issues with air leakage – which can leave you in a dangerous spot…  Not only this but due to the lighter weight, they are significantly more affected by wind, causing difficulties with tracking and you can easily be blown off course.

In this guide, we have reviewed the good, bad, and downright ugly options on the market to save you and your family/friends from having a bad time on the water… But not only this, we have also searched the web to find the best discounts on our recommended models.

3-Person Inflatable Kayak Reviews:

Our #1 Pick! > Best for 3 people

Editor's Rating

5/5
465ft FastTrack Inflatable

The 465ft is our top recommendation for a 3-person kayak, providing that extra capacity to allow three adults to sit comfortably, plus with excellent tracking thanks to its unique keel.

If you ever used the 385ft FastTrack, you will love the new 465ft kayak. The latter has all the great features of the former, but it has more room to carry more people and loads.

The new 465ft FastTrack inflatable kayak has the latest streamlined design that promises easy navigation: the NeedleKnifeTM Keel. The new kayak also comes with two open-close drain plugs.

Even though 465ft is larger when compared to the previous 385ft, it remains lightweight. Besides, we found the 465ft kayak fits into a bag almost half its size.

That means you can pack your fun boat in your car with ease.

The best part yet: you can inflate your 465ft kayak within 8mins.

That is convenience and high performance at its peak!

Product Summary

  • Interior: 431cm x 45 cm
  • Capacity: 795 lbs or 3 people
  • Exterior: 465 cm x 91 cm
  • Inflation and assembly time: 8 minutes
  • Deflated: 76cm x 48cm x 23cm
  • Rated for Class II rapids
  • Material: 1,000 denier woven base cloth

Key Features

Streamlined Shape And The NeedleKnife Keel

We loved the NeedleKnife keel. The manufacturers built 465ft kayaks in with a unique keel shape, allowing the boat to easily break through waves and move swiftly.

The shape also means the kayak can move with improved balance and stability, unlike previous models.

Furthermore, the 465ft inflatable kayak has the unique patent NeedleKnife Keel. With that, you get a technology that complements the shape of your boat.

In other words, you get a super-fast breakthrough kayaking on oceans and white water generally.

The Drop Stitch Floor

Like other products of the Sea Eagle, the 465ft kayak also comes with a drop-stitch floor. This feature sits right on the exterior covering. And that benefits you and your boat.

This model has a separate high-pressure drop-stitch floor which we found provides excellent rigidity for your kayak against damage. I found that once inflated to 11psi, the floor was very solid.

Another great feature we discovered was that I could easily remove the flooring making cleaning a breeze.

Detachable Skeg

Either deflated or inflated, you can detach the skeg at the rear end of your kayak. When you do that, you will enjoy kayaking along turbulent water. For calm water bodies like the lake, you can leave the skeg on for balance.

Pros
Additional capacity – simply put the 465ft has more space for more people and more gear Paddling – We tested this model on lakes, rivers, and in the ocean, and with three people on board and we can confirm this ‘yak tracks and paddles extremely well. Comfortable seats – 465ft kayaks come with 20 D-rings. Thanks to that feature, the seats are intact and readily support the weight of the passengers. Rigid – The separate inner high-pressure drop stitch floor provided outstanding rigidity while protecting it from any damage. Additional storage – the 465ft kayak offers you to have fun with two of your friends. Also, the boat has storage space for camping gear if needed. There is a discount found here:

Cons

– If you are mainly using for two people, we felt the 385 was easier to handle compared to the 465

– The hard-shell keel makes it harder to fold, but I felt it is worth that sacrificing for the improved tracking.

Actual 465ft 3 Person Inflatable Kayak Reviews from Customers

Solid boat, use it every weekend in summer. Many times 3 of us plus our 2dogs!”

“We have had 465ft for 5years. We mainly use it in Yellowstone National Park on Lake Yellowstone. We have had this boat in big water, flat water, and rivers and never felt unsafe. I also use it as a SUP. I weigh over 200lbs, and with the floor blown up hard, I can stand up in the kayak and go all over the place. We also bought the sail kit; it works well if the wind is behind you. We purchased boats with the high back seats; they are very uncomfortable for us. Last year we changed them to blow up kinds. They are so much nicer on a long trip.” – Verified customer, March. 5, 2020.

Recommended for
  • People that go padding mainly with 3 people
  • Kayakers who need extra storage
Not recommended for
  • If you mainly go paddling with 1 or 2 people, this may not be the best choice.

Sea Eagle SE370 Inflatable Sport Kayak Pro Package

This is a great all-rounder kayak to use for one or two people, with the occasional third person or pet.

From our first three person adventure around Channel Islands National Park, this kayak impressed us.

It is easy to inflate, handled really well, and it packed up fast.

The SeaEagle 370 is over a foot longer than SE330, allowing more space and greater weight capacity for gear, kids, or dogs.

This model is as lightweight and portable as it gets, but yet I found it was still remarkably stable and durable.

The Sea Eagle 370 kayak can fit into the smallest storage places. It is also easy to set up and needs only one person to carry it.

The 3 man inflatable kayak features a thick Polykrylar hull which safeguards the boat from punctures when it bumps into rocks, and other rigid materials in the water. The rigidity of the floor has also been reinforced with I-beams.

It also comes with molded skegs. They ensure that the tracking of your kayak is smooth. You don’t need to exert much effort when paddling since the skegs maximize your paddling efforts.

We loved that the seats are removable, and this increases your customization options. Want to pack heavy for a trip? Don’t worry because the SE370 kayak can take a 650lbs carrying capacity and a reasonably sized storage area.

Whether you want to go fishing, on adventurous trips, skin diving, yacht tending, or riving running, this sturdy boat can take you. It can even handle up to grade three white waters.

Product Summary

  • Interior: 10 feet, 8 inches by 1 foot, 1 inch
  • Capacity: 650 lbs
  • Weight: 49 lbs
  • Exterior: 12 feet, 6 inches by 2 feet, 10 inches
  • Inflation and assembly time: 8 minutes
  • Deflated: 31 by 19 by 8 inches
  • Material: K80 PolyKrylar™ hull
  • Rated: for Class III rapids

Key Features

Skegs

The skegs ensure that your kayak moves in the direction you want them to move. They not only make tracking easy, but they also improve the speed at which your boat moves.

Comfortable seats

We found the seats super comfortable, with good back support, allowing you to sit for an extended period without issues.

Carry bag

You don’t need to worry about how to transport your 3-man inflatable kayak since the package includes a carry bag. You can package it into this bag and travel with it or store it until you are ready to use it again.

  • Great all-rounder

Actual SE370 3 Person Inflatable Kayak Reviews from Customers

“I doubted the durability of this kayak. My doubt grew even more when it took less than 10 minutes to set up. However, after my first trip, I am convinced that this product works as advertised. My wife and I fit into it without issues.” Verified customer, August 1, 2017.

“I have been using this boat for almost three years now, and it has given me good value for my money. I am happy that you can use this boat in many situations, and it is compact enough to be stored in your car’s trunk. This kayak is easy to set up, and it is also durable.”

Recommended for
  • People who go on kayaking trips on white waters.
  • Users who want a kayak that is easy to set up.
  • A group of two or three kayakers.
  • People who want an easy-to-store kayak.
Not recommended for

– I wouldn’t recommend to anyone who needs to bring camping equipment as there is not a large amount of cargo space

Sea Eagle 420x Explorer

Need a fast, inflatable, lightweight, and versatile kayak that can handle white water and rapids? Then, try the all-new 420x Explorer Kayak.

The 420x Explorer is a truly great all rounder kayak, which is perfect for paddlers who want both adventures in white-water and the calm of paddling across lakes and slow rivers.

Thanks to the Explorer’s 16 automatic draining valves, the kayak is suited for all types of water fun.

When opened, the valves can help to keep out water from the ocean. And when closed, they equally help you stay dry and high on lakes.

When comparing against earlier models from 2012, they only had 4 automatic draining valves, which were poorly positioned. However, the manufacturer SeaEagle has improved the design in the latest model with the 16 draining valves, which I found to be vastly improved.

Despite all the new features, the hull of a 420x Explorer only weighs about 44 lbs. As such, you can comfortably move it around.

Even with the lightweight, the kayak has a carrying capacity of 855 lbs. That means it can carry three people conveniently.

It is large enough for two adults and a child in the middle, or you could probably squeeze in 2 small kids or a pet in the middle.

Lastly, you only need 9mins tops to inflate the kayak. In other words, you have plenty of time to enjoy your planned trip.

Product Summary

  • Interior: 406 cm x 38 cm
  • Weight: 42 lbs
  • Capacity: 885 lbs or  3 people
  • Exterior: 427 cm x 100cm
  • Inflation and assembly time: 9 minutes
  • Deflated: 79cm x 53cm x 25cm
  • Rated: Class IV rapids

Key Features

Automatic Operating Drain Valves

As mentioned, this model has vastly improved 16 automatic drain valves. The aids help to get water out of your kayak and to stay afloat.

The said draining valves have two modes; the open and the shut options. For the open, it helps you to bail water off your kayak as soon as it gets it. On the other hand, the close mode keeps you afloat on flat water bodies with less turbulence.

Rigid And Protective Flooring

Another unique feature of the 420x Explorer is the design of its flooring. It has a drop-stitch, high-pressure, rigid interior floor that matches the exteriors.

We found it stable and rigid enough to stand up with no issues.

The interior flooring improves the ease of paddling, with the rigidity protecting the kayak from any potential interior damage, while the exterior of the 420x Explorer bounces off rocks without issue. Lastly, the 420x Explorer has a modular design. For that reason, you can remove the flooring with ease for maintenance.

Removable Skeg

To experience even more fun on shallow and/or white waters, you can remove 420x Explorer’s skeg. The best part is that the skeg is removable in both deflated and inflated kayaks. However, we found using the 420x in white water without the skeg that the directional tracking was difficult.

If you switch to flat water, we would recommend you fit back the removable skeg. Doing so will help you have better control of your kayak.

Pros
  • Good discount found here:
    >>    Click here for discount
  • Versatile – the 420x Explorer suits either calm or white water. In other words, the kayak meets the needs of varying kayaking, be it fishing, touring, or just relaxing.
  • Rigid – the interiors and exteriors have drop-stitch protective layers. That means you needn’t worry about objects such as rocks.
  • Lightweight – 420x Explorer’s hull only weighs 40 lbs. That means you would task yourself too much. Besides, you can deflate it to weigh even less.
Cons
  • The drain valves can sometimes leak. So, that means you’d constantly check the plugs. Else, you need to remove and dry the floorings often.

Actual 420x 3 Person Inflatable Kayak Reviews from Customers

Great little boat. Extremely convenient. We use it on rivers and lakes often. And I am impressed with the overall strength of the material. After several rivers run, I was worried about all the times I’ve hit large rocks and dragged the bottom of the boat. However, you can barely see any scratches. My son and I will head to the river and take the kayak in a Smart Car (small two-seat vehicle with a little luggage space behind the seats). I can fit the boat, seats, oars, battery inflation, vests, storage bins, and a small cooler in there. People are stunned to see us inflate a kayak twice the length of my car and jump in the river. Fun stuff.” – Verified customer, Sept. 12, 2019.

Recommended for
  • People that want a kayak that suits all kinds of paddling
  • Great versatility
  • A group of two to occasionally three people who enjoy rapids and white water
Not recommended for

– Without the skeg, the directional stability is poor

– As it is a multipurpose kayak, it is suitable for most things, but not perfect in any one scenario.

Sevylor Big Basin

Need something on a tight budget? This is our recommended budget 3-person kayak.

This Sevylor kayak is a durable boat is designed to give you a complete sense of safety and security on your kayaking trips.  It is made of heavy-duty PVC and tarpaulin. The tarpaulin is lined at the bottom to ensure that the kayak does not get punctured easily.

The good thing is that even if one part gets punctured, the entire boat will not deflate because it has multiple air chambers. The many air chambers allow another chamber to stay inflated after a puncture.

If you want a kayak that will keep you and your partners comfortable, this fits the bill. The seats are adjustable to ensure that you fit into it properly. This three person inflatable kayak is easy to deflate and inflate due to the double-threaded Boston Valve.

It comes with spray covers that protect you from water splashes. The Sevylor inflatable kayak is designed for lake use, and it features an airtight system to prevent leakages. The outstanding features make this model one of the best 3 person inflatable kayaks.

Product Summary

  • Weight: 44.3 lbs
  • Carry capacity: 490lbs NMMA certified.
  • Manufacturing materials: PVC and tarpaulin.
  • Product dimensions: Product Dimensions: 18 x 10 x 24 in.  34.8 pounds.

Key Features

High-quality materials

Comfortable seats

The fabric on the seats feels comfortable on the skin. You can adjust the seat so that it is not too small or too big for you, which is ideal for youths or kids who want to go for a paddle. Since you can adjust the seat, you will enjoy a comfortable ride irrespective of your body size. People who love to carry beverages along on kayaking trips will appreciate the bottle holders beside every seat.

Leak-proof system

The Sevylor Big Basin kayak features an airtight system. This prevents even the smallest amount of water from penetrating. With this kind of system, kayakers can be sure that there will be no leaks.

Actual Sevylor 3 Person Kayak (Inflatable) Reviews from Customers:

Recommended for
  • People who want a kayak for three people, or who intend to do some light fishing from the kayak.

Not recommended for
  • People looking for a premium kayak

Other 'yaks we thought worth a mention

Driftsun Almanor Inflatable Kayak

The Driftsun Almanor is a great all-round family kayak. We found it to be relatively lightweight and easy to transport, but yet it still has a decent 500 lbs capacity. When comparing to our top kayak pick for 3-people we found it to not have the same space for three adults to sit comfortably.

BKC TK122K Kayak

We couldn’t write up a buyer’s guide on the top ‘yaks we reviewed without mentioning the BKC TK122K. This is a great all-round boat, with plenty of space for cargo or fishing gear. However, when we compared this model to the others mentioned it was far heavier, making transporting it on our trips quite tricky. But when compared to the others, we did feel this would be a top choice for someone looking to go fishing in their kayak.

My Personal Thoughts and Recommendations:

Our whole team agrees that any kayak from the manufacturer SeaEagle is a wise choice. The company has been in business since 1968 and offers a 4-month trial guarantee, with a 3-year manufacturer’s warranty, so that you can purchase with total peace of mind. All of their boats are NMMA certified, ensuring the quality and robustness of your vessel. SeaEagle has over 16,000 verified 5-star reviews via Shopper Approved website, as shown here. Finally, I suggest purchasing directly from the SeaEagle site to ensure you get the full manufactures warranty; check out their website here.

What to Look for When Buying a Kayak for 3 People

Our team uses the below factors when assessing and researching the top kayaks avaliable.

Intended Use

Finding a kayak suited for your intended use is one of the paramount factors when selecting a ‘yak.
Think about things such as where you will intend to use the kayak and how many people will be onboard.
If you intend to use the kayak for three adults verses one adult and two children then different kayaks would be better suited for each specific option due to the differences in weight capacity .

Versatility

Many three-person inflatable kayaks are intended for use on flat calm water, so if you intend on paddling in rough rivers or white water, you should choose a canoe that is explicitly designed for more advanced  waterways

Another versatility consideration is if you will always be venturing out with the same number of people. If you always are on trips with 3 adults each time, then you should select a kayak that is designed for this capacity. However, many products have options for flexible seating that can be added or removed – making it more versatile for use with one, two, or three people.

Weight Capacity

When selecting your new kayak, you must check that the weight capacity suits your needs.

Firstly you need to consider the weight range of your fellow paddlers, but not only this – you need to consider if you will be likely to be bringing extra weight, such as pets, camping equipment, or fishing gear, which will require a kayak that is designed for a higher weight capacity.
As a general rule of thumb, it is wise not to load your ‘yak with over 80% of the manufacturer’s specifications. When you consider that you don’t want to load a boat beyond about 80% of its stated weight capacity for maximum performance, a kayak with a 500 lb weight limit can only really accommodate 400 lbs of weight.
We suggest you calculate your crew’s combined weight, plus any extra equipment you will be bringing – if this is for example, 500 lbs, then it would be wise to select a boat that was designed for 600 lbs.

Number of seats

The number of seats seems a straightforward matter. However, many products have flexible seating options. If you intend paddle with three adults most of the time, then it would be wise to select a kayak designed for 3 adults such as the Sea Eagle 465ft or the 420x Explorer.

However, many families will use the boat with two adults and one child or a single adult and two children. In these cases, it can be more suitable to choose a kayak such as the Sea Eagle 370, which has flexible seating options.

Stability

The stability of your chosen kayak will be vital in keeping everyone safe and dry. Generally, when you are paddling solo, it is fairly easy to keep the boat stable, but once you add in a few extra adults or a pet, then the stability can be more of a concern

Ideally, the boat needs to be stable enough to allow leaning on the side without causing the whole thing to capsize. Generally speaking, the larger and fishing kayaks are more stable when compared to the smaller models. They will provide better stability and be able to handle choppy waters better.

Portability and Storage

An important consideration is the logistics of transporting and storing your new kayak.

Some of the larger kayaks can be quite a significant object to haul to the water and then back to your garage or place of storage.

Obviously, inflatable kayaks are significantly easier to transport and store compared to a rigid hard-shell version.

If you don’t have adequate capacity in your garage or your vehicle for transporting, then an inflatable kayak will be the preferred choice.

However, if space is less of an issue, then you can select a rigid-top product. You will likely need a flatbed truck or roof rack to be able to transport your boat down to the river. Additionally, it is common to need  a storage rack in your garage to keep it out of the way and free from accidental damage.

Skeg

Most inflatable kayaks come with a skeg. A skeg is a fin attached to the bottom of your boat, which is designed to improve the tracking in the right direction whilst paddling.
Often these skegs are removable, but on other models, they are permanently attached to your boat.
Using skegs is generally recommended for the majority of conditions. However, if you intend to do some white-water rapids or shallow paddling, then selecting a kayak with removable skegs is wise.

Pump (hand, foot, electric)

It seems obvious, but if you are intend to purchase an inflatable kayak, it will need to be inflated with a pump of some kind to transform your boat from a pile of folded vinyl into a rigid vessel.
There are several types of pumps available, and most kayaks come with a basic manual pump. These are fine for most use cases but just be prepared to get a workout before you even get on the water.
However, if you want a more leisurely day out on the water, you might want to consider purchasing an electric pump. The basic versions can be pulled into your vehicle, letting you inflate your kayak wherever your vehicle is parked. However, there are options with rechargeable batteries allowing you to inflate your boat right at the water’s edge.

Inflatable vs. Hardshell Kayaks

Most 3-man kayaks on the market these days are inflatable variants. There are many significant advantages to inflatable vs. rigid kayaks, such as the ease of transport and storage. However, rigid-shelled kayaks do have some advantages over the inflatable types, such as improved robustness and being less likely to leak or get damaged from impacts with rocks. But not only this, but rigid versions offer improved tracking and control due to the lower occupant seating position and deeper keel.

Features & Functionality

Kayak manufacturers offer a variety of features on their boats. Therefore it is worth considering which are essential to your need.
Many include features such as:
Seating is one of the more critical features to consider. Having comfortable and adjustable seating options allows for a much more comfortable day out on the water.
Rigid and protective flooring to help the robustness, some of which are removable for maintenance.
Automatic drainage values help you remove any water which makes its way into your boat.
Carry bags are a great feature that some manufacturers include with a kayak purchase making life much easier when transporting the vessel.
Storage options can be needed for carrying around extra gear, such as fishing or camping equipment.

Durability

Selecting a manufacturer that uses high-quality materials is essential to ensure your kayak lasts and doesn’t damage or fall apart after a few uses. As previously mentioned, rigid-shelled kayaks generally offer superior durability compared to inflatable options. However, if you opt for a Sea Eagle product, they use high-quality PVC and tarpaulin, which has good durability, along with drop-stitch flooring to provide great rigidity and durability.

Frequently Asked Questions:

Three-person kayaks are ideal for social outings with close relatives or friends on the water. Rivers and lakes are no match for their stability and manoeuvrability. And because there are three paddlers, they can go much more quickly than regular kayaks.

A tandem kayak features two seats for two paddlers, while a solo kayak has only one. Two people can sit in a tandem kayak, while a single kayak can only hold one. It takes the same paddling techniques to propel a tandem kayak as a single-person kayak, but the tandem kayak is heavier.

There is a maximum weight for each kayak. For reference, the weight capacity of a recreational kayak is usually between 250 and 300 pounds, that of a touring (sea) kayak is 350 pounds, that of a sit-on-top kayak is between 350 and 400 pounds, and that of a tandem kayak is between 500 and 600 pounds.

Kayaking is generally safe in any wind direction with speeds under 10 knots (11.5 mph). An offshore breeze makes it highly challenging to paddle back on an inflatable kayak, so keep that in mind.

Conclusion

We have spent many hours testing and reviewing the best 3 person kayaks on the market, and it is clear to us that the best in the market are manufactured by the brand Sea Eagle.

All three of the models we have listed are best-in-class inflatable kayaks, perfect for taking your friends and family out padding in safety.
